MICHAEL LIEBREICH /// CHAIRMAN ADVISORY BOARD - BNEF
Michael Liebreich is Founder and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Bloomberg New Energy Finance, the world’s leading provider of research on clean energy, energy technology and advanced transportation. Michael founded New Energy Finance in 2004 and acted as Chairman and Chief Executive before selling it to Bloomberg LP in 2009. Bloomberg New Energy Finance is headquartered in London and now has over 200 staff in 13 offices around the world. Since August 2012 Michael has served as a Board Member of Transport for London. He is a member of the high-level Advisory Group for the UN Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative and is Founder and Chairman of Finance for Resilience (FiRe), EcoVillages and the Liebreich Foundation. He is a Visiting Professor at the Imperial College Energy Futures Lab. Michael is Chairman of technology startup Pearlshare and of St. Mark’s Hospital Foundation, a charity supporting research in colorectal medicine. He is a three-time finalist in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, and in 2015 was presented with the Renewable Energy Association's Judges Award for lifetime achievement. Michael is a member of the Advisory Council of Business for Britain. Prior to founding New Energy Finance, Michael acted as Deputy Managing Director of Associated Press Television and Founding Director of Sports News Television, then as UK Managing Director of Groupe Arnault’s technology investment. He spent five years in the London office of McKinsey & Co. Michael graduated in Engineering from University of Cambridge with 1st class honours, winning the Ricardo Prize for Thermodynamics and Christ’s College Wyatt Prize. He has an MBA from Harvard, where he was a Harkness Fellow and Baker Scholar. He was a member of the British Olympic Ski Team in 1992.

Michael Liebreich, the closing keynote speaker at the conference, is Chairman of the Advisory Board and Founder of Bloomberg New Energy Finance. He is well-known internationally as a speaker on RE trends and topics.
Michael states that "The time is coming when we have to leave behind mechanisms that simply support renewable energy. Wind and solar are now so cheap they are going to soak up all of the demand during sunny days or windy weather whatever we do. If we overbuild, we will just crash the price during those times to zero. What is needed now is mechanisms for clean energy to meet demand at the other times: the nights, and the days without wind, but they must be efficient. Capacity markets are a blunt instrument which will suppress innovation. What we need is markets which pay a premium for firm power, power you can rely on whatever the weather. Then it will be game on: every technology and player can compete to provide it, and we’ll get real price signals.” He also hopes that 2017 will be “the year the world gets serious about risks to its increasingly digital and connected infrastructure – whether those risks stem from malicious attacks, technical failures, unpredicted weather impacts or spikes in demand. “I hope I’m wrong, but worry that the world is about to get a very unpleasant wake-up call – if not this year, then some time soon."
